Do You Know What Condition Your Condition Is In? (Understanding SA/DA Handgun Condition Codes)

One of the things I preach is education and training. There is always more knowledge that can be obtained, and the moment you cease to learn is the moment that you cease to improve. In the spirit of education let’s talk about weapon conditions in regards to single and double action handguns.

Condition 4 – In this condition, the chamber is empty, the magazine well is empty, and the hammer is down.

Condition 3 – In this condition, the chamber is empty, a loaded magazine is in the magazine well, and the hammer is down.

Condition 2 – In this condition, a round is chambered, a loaded magazine is in the magazine well, and the hammer is down. -This condition is DA only.

Condition 1 – In this condition, a round is chambered, a loaded magazine is in the magazine well, the hammer is back, and the safety is engaged.

Condition 0 – In this condition, a round is chambered, a loaded magazine is in the magazine well, the hammer is back, and the safety is disengaged.

Now when you hit the range and the Range Safety Officer calls a cease fire and asks for the weapons to be placed in condition 4, you’ll know what that means.
